Pickup Truck Carrying Hazelnut Workers Overturned in Giresun: 1 Dead, 9 Injured

Giresun - A 68-year-old worker lost his life and 9 others were injured in a traffic accident when a truck carrying hazelnut workers overturned in Tirebolu district of Giresun. The accident once again brought the problems of worker transportation during the hazelnut harvest period to the agenda.

Incident and Response

The accident occurred when the 61 AV 437-plate pickup truck driven by G.K. went out of control and overturned into a hazelnut garden while traveling in Arslancık village of Tirebolu. Upon the notification of those who saw the accident, many teams were dispatched to the scene. 112 Emergency Health, gendarmerie, fire brigade and AFAD teams quickly reached the scene and made the first intervention to the wounded.

One Life Lost in Disaster

Orhan Tomak, 68, one of the hazelnut workers in the truck, died at the scene of the accident. Tomak's lifeless body was taken to the morgue after investigations at the scene.

Injured People Transferred to Hospital

The driver G.K. and workers K.Y., Y.A., İ.K., E.K., O.K., S.K., Y.C. and O.K. who were injured in the accident were transferred to hospitals in Tirebolu and Görele by ambulances after the first intervention of the health teams. While the treatment of the wounded continues, it is learned that the condition of some of the wounded remains serious.

Hazelnut Season and Worker Safety

In this period of intensified hazelnut harvesting in and around Giresun, the transportation of agricultural workers under unsafe conditions is frequently on the agenda. This accident once again showed how the lack of adequate precautions in the transportation of seasonal workers, especially in the agricultural sector, can have dire consequences.
