Two workers died when a freight elevator broke in two on the 12th floor of a 15-storey construction site in Mamak, Ankara. Construction work was halted after the work murder and an investigation was launched into the accident.
ANKARA/MAMAK - In a horrific work accident at a construction site in Ankara's Mamak district, two workers were tragically killed when a freight elevator split in two on the 12th floor. The incident has once again painfully brought to the fore the shortcomings of occupational health and safety in the construction industry.
The incident occurred in the morning hours at a 15-story construction site in Ege neighborhood of Mamak district. For an undetermined reason, the load elevator carrying workers on the 12th floor of the construction site suddenly split in half.
As a result of this horrific accident, two workers on the 12th floor fell meters to their deaths and died on the spot.
112 Emergency Health and police teams were quickly dispatched to the area upon the alarm. The workers were pronounced dead upon examination by paramedics. After the work murder, Mamak Municipality teams arrived at the scene and immediately stopped construction work. Police have launched a large-scale forensic investigation to determine why the freight elevator split in two and whether negligence led to the accident.
Such crane and elevator accidents highlight the inadequacy of inspections on construction sites in terms of equipment maintenance, periodic checks and safe working methods. The identities of the two workers who lost their lives are expected to be determined and the exact cause of the accident is expected to be revealed.
