Baytur Construction Workers in Saudi Arabia Allege Wage and Rights Extortion: "Turks Are Not Slaves!"

MEKKE - More than 600 workers, including 150 Turks, working in the "Mashar" project of Baytur company in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, have started a strike claiming that they have not received their accumulated salaries for 10 months and that their rights have been usurped. While trying to make their voices heard with their 60-day strike, the workers called on the Turkish and Saudi Arabian authorities, "We are being worked like slaves, we want to return to our country."

10 MONTHS' SALARIES GASPED

Workers working on the Mashar project in Mecca have stated that they have suffered a great victimization due to the non-payment of their 10-month salaries accumulated under harsh working conditions. The workers claimed that the group of about 600 people, including Turks and Pakistanis working on the project, were under severe exploitation as they were not paid their salaries and were not given their rights by the company.

"OUR RIGHTS ARE BEING GRABBED, WE CAN'T GO TO OUR COUNTRY"

The striking workers publicized the difficulties they are experiencing, saying that they have been denied their salaries as well as their right to return. Stating that they wanted to return to their country but were prevented from doing so by the company, the workers argued that they were being held against their will and that this situation violated basic human rights.

60 DAYS OF STRIKES

Stating that they started the strike 60 days ago to show their reaction against wage and rights extortion, the workers emphasized that their strike will continue and that they will not end the strike until they receive their rights. Supporting their protest with vocal and written banners, the workers expressed their tragedy with the slogan "Turks are not slaves!" and demanded help from national and international authorities.

CALL TO AUTHORITIES: OUR STATE HELP US

The workers called on the authorities of the Republic of Turkey, especially the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to help them. Stating that they believe that their state will not leave them alone as Turkish citizens who are in a difficult situation abroad, the workers demanded that diplomatic initiatives be launched to ensure the payment of their salaries and their return to their countries as a matter of urgency. The incident is expected to bring the issues of labor rights and protection of migrant workers back to the agenda in the international arena.
