The United Public-Is Confederation made a statement on the allegations that Murat Çalık, Mayor of Beylikdüzü, is suffering from severe health problems in prison. The confederation emphasized that human life should not be a means of punishment and called for immediate treatment.
Ankara - The United Public-Is Confederation has issued a harsh statement to the public and authorities regarding the allegations that the health condition of Murat Çalık, the Mayor of Beylikdüzü, who is currently in prison, is deteriorating. The confederation stated that they strongly oppose turning human life into a means of punishment in political and legal processes and called for Murat Çalık to be granted immediate treatment.
United Public Workers' Union (UKI) stated that the allegations that Murat Çalık, the mayor of Beylikdüzü, lost 21 kilograms during his detention, suffered from severe health problems and was suspected of having lymphoma deeply shook the public opinion. The Confederation emphasized that this situation has damaged the public conscience and that it cannot remain silent in the face of this grave situation. The statement demonstrated the seriousness of the allegations and pointed out that the matter should be clarified as soon as possible.
The Confederation placed human rights and the rule of law at the center of its statement. Regardless of the allegations against them, it was stated that the right to treatment is the most fundamental human right of every individual whose health is at risk of life-threatening conditions. The statement emphasized that the transformation of human life into a means of punishment in political and legal processes is strongly opposed, and added: "Human life is an irrevocable line. This line is the red line of law and humanity."
United Kamu-İş stated that the detention of a citizen like Murat Çalık, who is not a flight risk, is a fundamental violation of his rights, especially when accompanied by serious health problems. He argued that the persistence of detention under these conditions goes beyond the legal process and turns into a punishment and endangers the life of the person. It was stated that this situation is contrary to the principles of fair trial and hurts the public conscience.
At the end of its statement, the United Public-Is Confederation called for urgent action by all relevant authorities. The Confederation called on the authorities to immediately put an end to this "unlawful" practice, to take steps to guarantee Murat Çalık's right to treatment and to ease the public conscience. This call means both protecting the right to health and defending the basic principles of law.
