Turkish Education and Science Union (Türk Eğitim-Sen) President Talip Geylan criticized the fact that teacher candidates still cannot start their duties despite the announcement of the 2024 KPSS interview results. "Education is being provided with around 80 thousand paid teachers, this delay is unacceptable," said Geylan and demanded that the rights of the 2023 interview victims be restored, additional appointment quotas be given and the successful AGS candidates be reinstated immediately.
ANKARA - Turkish Education and Science Union President Talip Geylan has reacted strongly to the long delays in teacher appointments and starting their duties. In his statement, Geylan pointed out that although the results of the 2024 KPSS interviews were announced on August 29, tens of thousands of teacher candidates have still not been able to start their duties, and stated that it is unacceptable to provide education services with around 80 thousand paid teachers across Turkey.
"Unassignability Problem" Deepens: 2027 Prospect Alarms
General President Geylan emphasized that the uncertainty in the teacher appointment process has deepened. He stated that not only those waiting to be appointed with the 2024 KPSS, but also 10 thousand prospective teachers who succeeded in the Candidacy Transition Examination (AGS) held on July 13 and will be trained at the National Education Academy continue to wait uncertainly.
According to Geylan's statement, the fact that these candidates, who are successful in the AGS, will be able to start their duties after completing the Academy training, at best, in the second half of 2027 at the earliest, reveals the extent of the teacher shortage and staffing problem in the education system. Geylan said, "We are currently facing a 'problem of not being able to appoint teachers'. Teachers are the pillar of education, the need for teachers must be met urgently," he said, making an urgent appeal to the authorities.
Turkish Education-Sen's Three Point Solution Request
Turk Eğitim-Sen President Talip Geylan made three basic demands to end the ordeal of prospective teachers and improve the quality of education services:
Restitution of Usurped Rights: The rights of all colleagues who entered the first 20 thousand according to the 2023 KPSS results, but whose rights were usurped by being unfairly treated in interviews, should be restored immediately.
Right to Additional Appointment: Teachers who have received high scores in the 2024 KPSS but have not been appointed due to limited quotas should urgently be given right to additional appointment.
AGS Successful Teachers on Duty Immediately: Teacher candidates who are successful in the AGS in July should complete their training BY A MOMENT and be reunited with their students. Geylan stated that the National Education Academy is not a stage of the teacher training process and that this process should be shortened.
Academy Training Should Be Shortened, Appointments Should End in Summer
Suggesting solutions for future processes, Geylan asked for a complete change in the appointment calendar: "The academy training of our candidate teachers should be shortened. The teacher appointment process should be initiated at the beginning of the summer semester, and teacher candidates should start their duties as of September 1st after two months of candidacy training in the summer."
Geylan stated that it is the greatest injustice to education to condemn thousands of young teachers to uncertainty while the current delays and the employment of 80 thousand paid teachers continue.
