Türk Eğitim-Sen called for rector appointments to be made through elections ahead of the 8th Term Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations. The union demanded democratic governance in universities.
Ankara - Shortly before the start of the 8th Term Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations, Türk Eğitim-Sen has made a radical demand regarding the administrative structure of universities. The union argued that rector appointments should be made through elections with the participation of all university employees, abandoning the current system. This call emphasizes that universities should be pioneers not only in science but also in democratic values.
In a statement released by the Turkish Education and Science Union (Eğitim-Sen), it was pointed out that universities play a key role in internalizing and spreading the understanding of democracy in society. The statement said that instead of rectors being appointed by appointment, they should be elected by the free will of all university staff. The union stated that this approach would both strengthen the legitimacy of university administrations and put the principle of academic autonomy on a firmer footing.
This demand, which was voiced ahead of the Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations that will begin on August 1st, shows that the union's agenda is not limited to economic rights. Türk Eğitim-Sen brought the issue of rector appointments to the collective bargaining table and emphasized that public workers should have a say not only in salaries, but also in matters concerning working life and the management structure of their institutions. The union's demand also brought the expectations of administrative reform in universities back to the agenda.
The demand for the appointment of directors through elections is also a reference to the principles of academic freedom and merit. Turkish Education and Science Union (Türk Eğitim-Sen) has voiced concerns that political preferences are used to make appointments in the current system, and argues that the selection system will emphasize merit and academic competence. This approach is seen as a critical step for universities to better focus on their scientific mission and strengthen the belief in fairness among employees.
The union's statement emphasizes that not only academics but also administrative and other university employees should participate in the rector elections. This attitude reflects the union's mission to represent the rights and will of all university workers. Türk Eğitim-Sen states that this comprehensive participation will enable university administrations to act in a more inclusive and participatory manner.
