Toleyis Union criticized the unauthorized overtime and harsh working conditions of tourism workers and said, "The tourism season is a season of shame!" The union called on the relevant ministries and the public opinion.
Ankara - The Hotel, Restaurant and Entertainment Workers' Union of Turkey (Toleyis) has issued a harsh statement on the harsh working conditions of workers in the tourism sector and especially their unauthorized shifts, calling on the relevant ministries and the public to take action. The union said, "While the customer says 'I am on vacation', we are thinking 'can we live? A tourism season where workers work without permission is a season of shame!" he expressed his reaction.
In a statement released on its social media accounts, the Tourism Union drew attention to the exploitation of labor in the tourism sector during the busy summer period. The union said that many workers in the sector work unauthorized and unpaid overtime hours beyond the legal weekly working hours, which robs them of their social life and right to rest. "We are thinking 'can we live?'" emphasized the human tragedy behind the attractive outlook of the tourism sector.
The union called for urgent intervention in this situation, tagging Minister of Labor and Social Security Vedat Işıkhan, Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the Presidential Communications Directorate. They demanded that the authorities take concrete steps to monitor working conditions in the tourism sector and protect the rights of workers.
Toleyis concluded its statement with the hashtag "#TurizmEmekcisiKoleDegildir", strongly emphasizing that tourism workers cannot work under slavery conditions and have the right to live humanely. With this hashtag, the union aims for the public and other labor organizations to show sensitivity to the issue and support the just struggle of tourism workers. At a time when summer tourism makes a great contribution to the country's economy, the message was given that this contribution should be achieved through fair and humane working conditions, not through the exploitation of workers.
