TES-İŞ President İrfan Kabaloğlu made a statement after the Sivas Kangal Thermal Power Plant fire and stated that it was pleasing that there were no casualties. Taking the opportunity of the fire, he drew attention to the risks of the subcontractor system in the energy sector and emphasized that for occupational health and safety, all workers doing the actual work should have permanent and guaranteed employment.
TES-İŞ Trade Union President İrfan Kabaloğlu issued a written statement wishing all employees and the people of the region get well soon due to the fire that occurred in the 3rd group flue gas treatment unit of the Sivas Kangal Thermal Power Plant. While it was stated that it was the biggest consolation that there was no loss of life or injury in the fire, the incident once again brought to the agenda the risks of the subcontractor system in the energy sector.
TES-İŞ Union made a statement immediately after the incident in the flue gas treatment unit, which was the starting point of the fire, and gave a message of support to the power plant employees. While it is reported that cooling works are currently continuing, it was noted as a pleasing development that there was no loss of life or injury.
President Kabaloğlu thanked the outstanding efforts of the teams responding to the fire. The statement expressed gratitude to Sivas Municipality, Kangal Municipality, surrounding district municipalities and Kangal Thermal Power Plant fire brigades, as well as health and gendarmerie teams working in the field.
Seeing the fire incident as a warning sign, TES-İŞ Union devoted the main theme of its statement to the risks of subcontracting in vital strategic sectors such as energy.
General President İrfan Kabaloğlu gave a clear message on the issue:
"This incident has once again shown that the risks of the subcontractor system are great in strategic and vital jobs such as energy production. The permanent and secure employment of the workers performing the main work is of great importance both in terms of occupational health and safety and in terms of the continuity, quality and efficiency of the work."
TES-İŞ emphasized that it is essential for the security of the facilities and the uninterrupted continuity of the national energy supply that the personnel performing the main work in the energy sector work in a permanent, secure and fully authorized staff status. The union stated that the precariousness brought about by subcontracting increases occupational health and safety risks and negatively affects employees' commitment to their jobs.
In a statement made on behalf of the Executive Board of TES-İŞ Union Headquarters, it was noted that the union will continue its struggle for the labor, working conditions and job security of its members with determination.
President Kabaloğlu once again showed that they are on the side of the workers by saying, "We convey our get well soon wishes to our entire organization, especially to our laborer brothers and sisters working at the Kangal Thermal Power Plant and the people of the region."
This incident once again proved the necessity of permanent and secure employment in the energy sector, which TES-İŞ Union has been advocating for a long time. The union said it expects the causes of the fire to be investigated in detail and the necessary structural measures to be taken immediately to prevent such incidents.
