Ramazan Şaşkın, a member of the General Labor Union, died after suffering a heart attack while fighting a forest fire in Orhaneli, Bursa. The accident brought the risks in fire fighting back to the agenda.
Bursa / Orhaneli - While Turkey has been struggling with forest fires for weeks, a new tragic incident has been added. Ramazan Şaşkın, a member of the Genel-İş Union, died of a heart attack while responding to a forest fire in Orhaneli district of Bursa. This devastating news caused deep sorrow for the teams fighting the fire and for the whole of Turkey.
Ramadan Şaşkın, who participated in the fire extinguishing efforts in Orhaneli, where intense efforts were made to bring the fire under control, suddenly fell ill while fighting against the flames. Şaşkın, who was taken to the hospital after the first intervention at the scene, could not be saved despite all interventions and died.
Genel-İş Union announced on its social media accounts that they are deeply saddened by the loss of their member Ramazan Şaşkın. "We extend our condolences and patience to the family, friends and loved ones of our member Ramazan Şaşkın, who lost his life while on duty," the union said in its statement.
Ramazan Şaşkın's death is a painful reminder that forest fires threaten not only our natural assets, but also the lives of our heroes fighting the fires. With the recent increase in the number of fires, firefighters, forestry workers and volunteers are working sacrificially under great risks. This incident once again brought to the agenda the difficult conditions faced by fire-fighting teams and the risks of physical fatigue.
Information about when and where Ramadan Şaşkın's body will be buried is expected to be shared with the public by his family. While Turkey buried another fire hero, this loss brought calls for more measures to be taken in the fight against fires and to improve the working conditions of the teams.
