HAK-İŞ and TÜRK-İŞ Confederations celebrated July 24 Journalists' and Press Day and drew attention to the harsh working conditions of press workers, precariousness, unemployment, low wages and barriers to unionization.
Ankara - HAK-İŞ Confederation and TÜRK-İŞ Confederation, important representatives of the trade union movement in Turkey, drew attention to the difficult working conditions of press workers and called for solutions to the problems in the media sector in their messages published on the occasion of July 24 Journalists' and Press Day. Both confederations emphasized the social importance of journalism and pointed to the precariousness, unemployment, low wages and barriers to unionization in the sector.
HAK-İŞ Confederation (@hakiskonf) published a message sincerely celebrating July 24th Journalists and Press Day. The message said, "We wish success to all press laborers who try to carry out the profession of journalism despite all the difficulties and carry journalism forward with their selfless efforts." HAK-İŞ expressed its appreciation for the critical role of journalists in ensuring society's right to access information and the sacrifices they make for this cause.
TÜRK-İŞ Confederation (@turkiskonf), on the other hand, in addition to its congratulatory message, addressed the serious problems faced by press workers in a comprehensive manner. "We sincerely congratulate the July 24th Journalists' and Press Day of all our press members who work day and night to inform the public quickly and effectively under difficult conditions and with great devotion," TÜRK-İŞ said in its message, drawing attention to the following critical points:
Precarious Working Conditions: It was stated that press workers, who struggle to convey the truth to the public, face precarious working conditions.
Unemployment and Pressures: It was emphasized that journalists are constantly exposed to the threat of unemployment and various pressures.
Rights Deprivations: It was stated that journalists, who work day and night to gather news and have no concept of overtime, are unfortunately deprived of many rights today.
Freedom of Unionization and Low Wages: It was underlined that a solution should be found as soon as possible to the grievances of press workers who do not have the freedom to unionize and face basic problems such as low wages.
TÜRK-İŞ called on the authorities to urgently resolve these problems and ensure that press workers enjoy the decent living and working conditions they deserve.
The messages of both trade union confederations showed that July 24 is not only a holiday, but also a day when the current difficulties in the press sector are expressed and demands for solutions are reiterated. HAK-İŞ and TÜRK-İŞ took a common stance on the need to ensure a secure, fair and free working environment for journalists to fulfill their social duties properly. These calls once again brought to the agenda the importance of union organization and protection of workers' rights in the media sector.
