On August 5, 1921, on the anniversary of the Commander-in-Chief authority given to Atatürk by the Turkish Grand National Assembly, United Kamu-İş and Eğitim-İş issued messages emphasizing Atatürk's leadership in the struggle for independence and the sovereignty of the people.
Ankara - On August 5, 1921, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) authorized Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk as "Commander-in-Chief" for three months before the Battle of Sakarya. This decision went down in history not only as a military authorization, but also as a concrete expression of the will of the people and the struggle for independence.
On the occasion of this meaningful day, United Public Workers Confederation emphasized that Atatürk's military genius and trust in his nation was the most decisive factor in the victory of the struggle for independence. In the statement, Atatürk and all martyrs and veterans were commemorated with respect, stating that the words "Armies, your first target is the Mediterranean, forward!" are still a source of inspiration today.
Eğitim-İş Trade Union also published a message stating that Atatürk's command-in-chief was not only a military title, but also a symbol of the will of the people and the ideal of full independence. The following statements were made in the message:
"Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk will remain the sole and eternal Commander-in-Chief not only of war but also of peace, popular sovereignty and labor."
On the anniversary of August 5, United Kamu-İş and Eğitim-İş once again commemorated Atatürk's leadership in the struggle for independence, his commitment to popular sovereignty and his determination to lay the foundations of the Republic.
