United Public-Is Reaction to Intervention in Democracy: "We will not stand by and watch the usurpation of the right to vote and be elected!"

ANKARA - The United Public-Is Confederation has strongly condemned the judicial appointment of a trustee to the Istanbul Provincial Presidency of the main opposition party CHP and the events that followed. In a press release, the Confederation emphasized that this is a clear usurpation not only of a political party, but also of the right to vote and be elected, which is the foundation of the Republic.

The statement drew attention to the unlawful obstructions against the people who want to exercise their democratic protest rights against this process, which has drawn the reaction of millions of citizens. Stating that the police and the public are being pitted against each other, United Public Workers' Union stated that this process is incompatible with law and democracy.

Basic Rights Are Being Usurped

The Central Executive Board of the United Public Workers' Union stated that a governor does not have the right to determine how the constitutionally guaranteed right to protest should be exercised. The statement emphasized that while the protests of associations and sects close to the government are allowed, erecting barricades against the people protesting against antidemocratic practices is an indication that the rulers have lost their impartiality.

The confederation stated that the obstacles imposed on transportation and the disruptions in social communication services during the protests in Istanbul meant that the right to travel and communication rights were also violated and said, "The basic freedoms that make democracy a democracy, such as the right to vote and be elected, the right to demonstrate, the right to travel, and the right to communicate, are being violated."

"We are the Guardians of the Gains of the Republic"

United Kamu-İş emphasized that in this process, the issue has now become the people's claim to their democratic rights and stated that these bans are an attack against the foundation of the Republic. The statement concluded with the words, "The day is the day to say, 'You cannot take away my rights that I have held for a century!' and to reject the unlawfulness."

The confederation emphasized that, in addition to being a labor organization, it will continue to stand behind the achievements of the Republic and against the attacks against it.
