Ankara – Just before the start of the 8th Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations, Türk Eğitim-Sen made a radical demand concerning the management structure of universities. The union advocated that rector appointments should be made through elections conducted with the participation of all university employees, moving away from the current system. This call emphasizes that universities should be pioneers and exemplary institutions for society, not only in a scientific sense but also in their understanding and practice of democracy.

In its statement, Türk Eğitim-Sen pointed out that universities play a key role in internalizing and disseminating the concept of democracy within society. The statement asserted that rectors should assume office through elections based on the free will of all university personnel, rather than through appointments. The union stated that this approach would both strengthen the legitimacy of university administrations and establish the principle of academic autonomy on a more solid foundation.

This demand, raised just before the start of the public employees' Collective Bargaining negotiations on August 1st, shows that the union's agenda is not limited to financial rights.
