Birleşik Kamu-İş Konfederasyonu reacted to the loss of volunteers' lives in the Bursa forest fire, criticizing incompetence and negligence in public administration. The confederation called for ensuring safety and merit-based appointments.
Ankara, Turkey – The tragic loss of three citizens, who died when a water tanker volunteering to fight forest fires in Bursa's Gürsu and Kestel districts overturned into a ravine after setting off from Bolu, has plunged all of Turkey into mourning. Following this painful incident, the Birleşik Kamu-İş Konfederasyonu released a statement, drawing attention to a new link in the chain of deepening incompetence and negligence in public administration. The confederation emphasized the urgent need to ensure the safety of deceased volunteers and forest workers.
The recent forest fire in Eskişehir, which also claimed the lives of volunteers and forest workers, had already sparked public outcry. The Central Executive Board of Birleşik Kamu-İş Konfederasyonu stated in a written declaration that these tragic incidents were not mere accidents but the result of a deepening chain of incompetence and negligence within public administration.
It was emphasized that the shortcomings in fighting fires were not only due to individual errors but also pointed to systemic problems. While acknowledging the selfless efforts of volunteer citizens across the country to bravely fight to protect forests, nature, and people, the confederation stressed that their loss of life due to a lack of necessary precautions, organizational deficiencies, and insufficient coordination was an unacceptable irresponsibility.
Birleşik Kamu-İş sharply criticized that the price for appointments made without considering knowledge, experience, and merit in fire management, along with unplanned implementations, was being paid by citizens with their lives. The confederation warned that as long as the cadre and management approach far from meritocracy continued, the cost of these neglects would only become heavier.
The confederation also put forward urgent solutions:
The safety of everyone acting with public duty consciousness must be ensured.
Personnel responsible for firefighting must be appointed based on merit.
Mandatory training, guidance, and safety protocols for volunteers must be immediately implemented.
These demands reflect the belief that meritocracy and safety should be fundamental principles not only for those combating fires but for all public services.
In conclusion of its statement, Birleşik Kamu-İş Konfederasyonu extended its condolences to the families of the citizens who lost their lives in Bursa and to the entire nation. The confederation reiterated its determination to continue its fight for meritocracy and justice in public administration. This stance indicates that unions are playing an active role not only in economic rights but also in the quality and safety of public services.
These latest tragic events have once again highlighted the need for Turkey to re-evaluate its forest fire management strategy and the principles of meritocracy in public administration.
