Memur-Sen and Palestine Support Platform are organizing a "Light of Hope" march from Beyazit Square to Hagia Sophia Mosque on Saturday, August 9th to draw attention to the genocide and hunger in Gaza.
ISTANBUL - Memur-Sen, one of the largest confederations of public employees, and the Support for Palestine Platform are organizing a historic march, declaring that they will not remain silent against the human tragedy in Gaza. Organized under the slogan "Be a Light of Hope for Gaza!", the demonstration will start from Beyazıt Square after the evening prayers and end at Hagia Sophia Mosque on Saturday, August 9 (today). The march aims to draw attention to the genocide and hunger crisis in Gaza and send a message of solidarity with the Palestinian people.
Walk with Lanterns from Beyazazıt Square to Hagia Sophia
Memur-Sen and the Support for Palestine Platform made a joint call to the march, stating that "humanity in Gaza is struggling to breathe in the grip of starvation and genocide" and emphasizing that they will not remain silent against this situation. The march has a symbolic meaning to give hope to the Palestinian people and "illuminate the darkness of oppression with the light of solidarity". Those who will participate in the event were invited to bring flashlights with them, and the call was made, "Come with your flashlight, let our light reach Gaza!"
Strong Stand by Trade Unions and Civil Society
This march is not only an action, but also reflects the stance of the trade union movement and civil society organizations in the face of global humanitarian crises. With this event, Memur-Sen shows that it takes responsibility for universal human rights as well as trade union rights and struggles. The organizers of the march stated that this action is not only a call, but also a determined stance and the voice of the Palestinian people and invited all sensitive citizens to participate in this meaningful event. Like the Women's Commission of Hava-İş Union, which has a similar stance with the slogan "If one woman does not shut up, a thousand women will not be alone", Memur-Sen is once again demonstrating its sensitivity to social issues with this march.
"We will not remain silent, we will not turn a blind eye"
Memur-Sen says "We will not remain silent or turn a blind eye" to the human tragedy in Gaza and emphasizes the need to keep this tragedy on the agenda of the world public opinion. The march aims to once again announce to the world the unwavering support of the civil society and trade union movement in Turkey for the Palestinian cause. Thousands of people will gather at Beyazıt Square and march with their lanterns towards Hagia Sophia Mosque to show that the people of Gaza are not alone and that the light of hope still exists.
