Unions and NGOs gathered in Izmir, led by ADD, to protest the decision to make November 10 a mid-term holiday. ADD President Hüsnü Bozkurt and United Public Work President Orhan Yıldırım criticized Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin, describing the decision as an effort to "make Atatürk forgotten" and "liquidate scientific education".
İZMİR - The Ministry of National Education's (MoNE) decision to make November 10, the anniversary of the death of the Great Leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, a mid-term holiday in the 2025-2026 education calendar has been widely condemned in Izmir. Unions and non-governmental organizations such as the United Public Workers Confederation, Eğitim-İş and the Association for Supporting Contemporary Life (ÇYDD), which came together under the leadership of the Atatürkist Thought Association (ADD), argued that the decision was part of an effort to forget Atatürk.
Speaking on behalf of the group that gathered in Alsancak and marched from the ÖSYM building to the Türkan Saylan Cultural Center, ADD President Hüsnü Bozkurt targeted Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin. Bozkurt accused Minister Tekin of violating the Constitution and disrupting secular and scientific education:
Cult and Congregation Allegation: Bozkurt reminded Minister Tekin's remarks on the floor of the Turkish Grand National Assembly that "we call the structures you call sects and congregations civil society organizations" and stated that he violated the Constitution.
Education Policies: He claimed that secular and scientific education has been turned into a bird with projects such as ÇEDES, depriving children of scientific knowledge.
November 10 Decision: Bozkurt said that Minister Tekin went so far as to think that he could make our children forget Atatürk by preventing them from commemorating him on November 10. Bozkurt continued, "Make no mistake, Yusuf Tekin's are temporary. But... The new Mustafa Kemals raised by the teachers of the Republic will determine the future of this country."
United Public Labor Confederation Chairman Orhan Yıldırım stated that the move to move November 10 to a mid-term holiday is a continuation of the government's 23-year-long efforts to close down the institutions of the Republic and make Atatürk forgotten.
Effort to Make Us Forget: Yıldırım said that after efforts to remove Atatürk's pictures from textbooks and take over the institutions of the Republic, we are finally going through a government that makes November 10 a holiday.
Love in Hearts: Emphasizing that these efforts will be fruitless, Yıldırım said, "86 million people have the love of Atatürk in their hearts. No one can prevent the love of Atatürk, the love of homeland in this country by making one day off from schools." he said.
Eğitim-İş General President Kadem Özbay also stated that the decision to take a break was not a coincidence, but a conscious choice.
Attack on the Cultural Revolution: Özbay stated that the decision actually aims to shake the foundation of education, which built the cultural revolution of the Republic, and argued that the political power has left schools to the occupation of sects and communities.
"November 10 is not only a day of remembrance but also a day of narration for us. November 10 is the consciousness of shouting out the strong will to carry Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's idea to eternity" he said. Finally, Özbay showed his will to continue the struggle with the words "The Republic will live forever".
