DİSK/Enerji-Sen Istanbul Branch No. 1 made a press statement in front of İSKİ and İGDAŞ General Directorates and demanded urgent measures to be taken for more than 100 workers injured due to working conditions.
Istanbul - Enerji-Sen Istanbul Branch No. 1, affiliated to the Confederation of Revolutionary Trade Unions (DİSK), held a press statement in front of ISKI and IGDAS General Directorates and reacted strongly to the unhealthy and precarious working conditions of the workers employed by the institutions. Branch President Olcay Karabulut said, "We don't want to be injured while working! Enough is Enough!" and announced that more than 100 workers have been reported incapacitated due to working conditions and demanded an urgent solution.
DİSK/Enerji-Sen members gathered in front of İGDAŞ General Directorate and tried to make their voices heard with banners and slogans. Branch President Olcay Karabulut, in his speech at the press conference, stated that more than 100 workers at İSKİ and İGDAŞ had to receive incapacity reports due to the harsh working conditions they were exposed to. Karabulut said that the union had held at least four meetings with the employers since the day it was authorized, but that they had "not received any tangible response."
Olcay Karabulut called on the management of İSKİ and İGDAŞ to take concrete responsibility. "We have come here today to demand that ISKI and IGDAS take concrete responsibility and take steps to change this crippling working regime," Karabulut said, emphasizing that the risks in the workplaces must be eliminated as soon as possible and working conditions must be brought to human standards. The union stated that occupational health and safety measures are inadequate and workers' health is disregarded.
DİSK/Enerji-Sen reiterated that worker health and safety is one of the main priorities of the union struggle. Stating that it is the most fundamental right of workers to perform their work in a healthy environment and under safe conditions, the union sent the message that they will continue their struggle to ensure these rights with determination. The union invited the management of ISKI and IGDAS to listen to the demands of the workers and act responsibly.
